La lectura
This week is the first week of the month and every month we have a new theme; “Persevera” (Stick to it) is our new them for February. We started with two fun books:
-
No te des por vencida (Don’t give up)
-
Manos a la obra (Let’s get to work)
These books reinforce the important knowledge that children need to believe in themselves and to also recognize their abilities on how to behave with a positive attitude. We practiced frequently used words in our dictation. We also had fun with an exercise that helps our children to remember which is the correct sound of each letter and how the words sound. We used this practice to also reinforce their blending skills.
The words of the week were: “Tengo” (I have), “Tiene” (He/She has), “Amor” (Love) and “Hacer” (Make). The craft of the week is related to Valentine’s day. Our children made a greeting card for this special occasion where they wrote what love is for them.
Las matemáticas
We started with new exercises to start helping our children to understand the concept of subtraction. The numbers we worked with this week were 92 to 95. We worked making sums with the abacus. We also continued to: recognize if the number is odd or even, identify tens and units. We also practiced counting 5 by 5 and 10 by 10. Reading written numbers has also been an important exercise we do every week.
Science
This week in our science domain, Seasons and Weather, we discussed spring, both in our local area and in Washington DC. The class worked on some seasonal art work as well. On Monday we celebrated Groundhog day.
Our weekly objectives were to:
• name the four seasons in cyclical order, as experienced in the United States, and correctly name a few characteristics of each season
• name at least one month and holiday in spring
• identify ways in which the weather in spring affect daily routines, such as dress, activities, Etc.
• draw pictures that show an understanding of each season
History & Geography
This week in our new unit, Presidents and American Symbols we learned about our 3rd president, Thomas Jefferson. We also learned about the Declaration of Independence and Statue of Liberty.
