Preschool Week 30

Servicios públicos

What a fun and busy week we had!  We not only conpreschool earth daytinued learning about community workers but we also celebrated Earth Day!

We learned all about the different people who work as part of grocery stores.  There are truck drivers, people to stock the shelves, people who work in the produce section and meat departments, and the people who work at the cash register.

We joined the rest of the school in an Earth Day celebration of ….gardening! We became jardineros for a day.  We all worked together to clear our school garden of rocks and woodchips.  We used our gardening tools and pulled a lot of weeds and grass / pasto. We also completed Earth Day projects in class (during the rainy Thursday and Friday classes.)

Letras y Números

letra yThis week we introduced the letter Y. The letter Y has the letter name: i griega.  It makes two distinct sounds in Spanish: /ē/ as in bee and /y/ as in yellow.  In some Spanish speaking countries you will also hear this sound as /j/ as in Jack.

It is very typical for young children to form the letter Y incorrectly.  As with all letters, this letter is formed from tpreschool bring your child to work dayhe top down.  The common error occurs here: The short part is on the left and the long part is on the right.

We continued to work with the number 15, quince, all week. They are doing a great job counting and matching groups of objects to the correct number.

We also had a few older siblings join us for Bring Your Child to Work Day.  They were very helpful and fun to have in the classroom with us!

Preschool Week 28

Servicios públicos

This week we introduced our new theme: Servicios públicos.   This week we read a great book highlighting many jobs.

bombero – fireman

cocinero – chef

dentista – dentist

maestra – teacher

médico – doctor

policía – police

You might notice your little one singing our Vamos a ser Bombero song.  This song is from Ana Lomba’s  Play & Learn Spanish (book and CD combo). It is great fun to act out and sing!

firefighter—el bombero/la bomberafire trucks preschool

fire station—la estación de bomberos

fire truck—el camión de bomberos

siren—la sirena

fire hydrant—la boca de incendio

fire hose—la manguera

fire hose nozzle—la boca de manguera

fire helmet—el casco

fire suit—el traje de protección

oxygen tank—el tanque de oxígeno

Letras y Números

This week we introduced the letter X. The letter X typically makes the same sound in English and Spanish,. Sometimes we say the /s/ sound without any /k/ sound.

We worked with the number 15, quince, all week.

Count, count, count! Count your snack, socks, toys, flowers, etc.

Point out numbers that you see in books and when you are out and about.

The kiddos also enjoyed  making multiplication fortune tellers for their 2s multiplication facts. They will be receiving their fortune teller for 3s,  upon mastery of their 2s facts.

I sent home a math packet to be finished over spring break. Please have your child complete it and bring it back our first day back.

Special Notes:

  • April Theme

For the month of April we will learn all about our community workers.  police officers, postal workers, firemen, garbage men, and more.  Have any items that would help out kiddos explore the theme? (Medical supplies? Toothbrushes?)

  • Pictures

Please send us your field trip pictures so we can add them to our collection of possible yearbook pics. (Or you can add yourself directely to the TreeRing site.)

Preschool Week 18

Our nursery rhyme of the week provided lots of opportunity for prepositions and whole body movement. Jack Be Nimble was great fun for jumping (saltando or salta).

We also used this opportunity to talk about fire safety and how it is never okay to play with candles or fire.

We had many opportunities to work on shape identification during our art projects.  These projects also provided great practice for following directions .

Identifying numerals and matching them to groups of objects was fun!

Letras This week we learned all about the letter V. The letter V can make the same sound in English and Spanish. It does have a “blurry” sound that makes it difficult to distinguish between the B and V. Think: numb lips from the dentist. Números We worked with the number 10 and had a blast forming groups of 10. We have been using 10’s frames to help us with our counting. These are something they will see more of in later years but we find them helpful to keep track of forming groups of a certain number.

Preschool Week 17

Nursery Rhymes

Humpty Dumpty was so much fun this week! We had a blast acting out the rhyme. It was especially fun to reach way up arriba and then act out Humpty falling se cayó.

Students did a great job sequencing the order of events from the story verbally and in pictures.

We completed a few multi-step projects. These are great activities as they provide practice focusing during instruction/modeling and then the student must recall the correct order of tasks for correct completion.  These activities also provided fine-motor skills practice with tearing, cutting, coloring, and painting.

We also used our musical instruments to practice staying in rhythm. Students took turns with different musical instruments and created loud and soft sounds, fast and slow rhythms.

Letras

This week we learned all about the letter L. The letter L makes the same sound in English and Spanish. We form the letter L from the top down. The lowercase L is either a straight line down or a line down with a little monkey tale at the bottom. Números This week we continued working with the number 9. We formed groups of 9, subtracted from 9, added up to 9, wrote the 9, identified the 9 amongst other numbers, etc. At this age adding and subtracting are done with concrete objects.
